The Call for Papers is officially open:
We are pleased to announce the 1st Workshop on Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) in Milan, Italy, on March 24, 2025. This is an opportunity for researchers, industry experts, and enthusiasts to share their latest insights, developments, and research on Open Radio Access Networks.
Abstract: The Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) concept marks a transformative shift in the design and operation of Radio Access Networks (RAN). Unlike traditional, proprietary RAN solutions tied to specific vendors, Open RAN introduces an open, disaggregated, and programmable network architecture. This paradigm shift is reshaping the future of wireless networks to meet the evolving demands of 5G-Advanced and 6G, leveraging open interfaces to facilitate interoperability between RAN components from different vendors.
While this new approach promises greater flexibility, innovation, and competition, it also introduces significant challenges by disrupting the status quo of single-vendor RAN architectures. Various communities, including telecom vendors, network operators, and regulatory bodies such as the O-RAN ALLIANCE and the Open RAN Policy Coalition, have been formed to bring together stakeholders and accelerate the transition to Open RAN. However, these communities primarily focus on developing blueprints and standard interfaces, leaving a gap for academia and industry to address the technical challenges and explore innovative solutions.
This workshop will focus on the technical, architectural, and algorithmic advancements driving the Open RAN transformation, as well as the business and political barriers to its widespread adoption. It aims to address the key challenges currently faced in the Open RAN landscape, fostering collaboration and innovation to push the boundaries of future wireless networks.
