Who is behind the consultation
From Orbit to Market is led by the UCD Network Intelligence and Automation Lab with the UCD Centre for Space Research, and works with the industry partners of the National Space Subsystems and Payloads Initiative.
Leads the consultation
Network Intelligence and Automation Lab (NIA)
The Network Intelligence and Automation Lab at the UCD School of Computer Science conducts research in intelligent, autonomous and data-driven network systems. The lab develops future communication infrastructures that operate adaptively, securely and efficiently, with core expertise in Open RAN conflict mitigation, autonomous resource sharing for satellite and non-terrestrial networks, and blockchain-assisted decision automation.
NIA contributes to the National Space Subsystems and Payloads Initiative (NSSPI), co-coordinates the European Commission-funded RE-ROUTE project, and leads the Data-driven xApps Conflict Management in Open RAN project funded by the Research Ireland CONNECT Centre.

Partner
UCD Centre for Space Research (C-Space)
C-Space is UCD’s university-wide hub for space-related research, innovation and education. Established in 2020, it links academia, industry and international agencies such as the European Space Agency (ESA).
Its flagship project, EIRSAT-1, was Ireland’s first satellite. Built by UCD students and staff under the guidance of ESA and launched in 2023, it detected gamma-ray bursts from orbit and completed its mission in 2025, training more than 50 students along the way. C-Space supports this consultation and helps convene the space research community.

National Space Subsystems and Payloads Initiative (NSSPI)
NSSPI aims to advance space technology development through collaboration, expertise and research, positioning Ireland as a recognised hub of space excellence. It is funded with €7.9 million from the Irish Government’s Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund, administered by Enterprise Ireland, and began in March 2024.
The initiative is a partnership between the UCD Colleges of Engineering & Architecture and Science and six industry partners: Réaltra, Ubotica Technologies, Altera, mBryonics, Equal1 and ÉireComposites. It focuses on optical communications for space; autonomous smart satellites; and spacecraft and payload modelling, simulation, assembly, integration and test.
